M4A files turn up everywhere on Apple hardware and then refuse to play on half the things you want to use them with. Voice Memos saves as M4A. iTunes and Apple Music downloads are M4A. WhatsApp voice notes arrive as M4A. Then you try to load one into an old car stereo, a DJ controller, a school presentation tool, or a piece of hardware from 2012, and nothing happens. Converting to MP3 fixes that, because MP3 is the format everything still supports.
The conversion itself takes about fifteen seconds. What most guides skip is the part that decides whether you end up with a usable file or a slightly worse copy of something that was already fine: what the conversion actually costs, and when you should not do it at all.
What an M4A file actually is
M4A is not a codec. It is a container, a wrapper that holds audio inside an MP4 file structure, and the audio inside it is usually AAC. That distinction matters, because two files that both end in .m4a can contain completely different things. Most contain AAC, which is lossy compression like MP3 but more efficient. Some contain Apple Lossless, which is not lossy at all.
You cannot tell which you have from the extension. A rough guide is size: roughly one megabyte per minute of stereo audio suggests AAC, while five megabytes or more per minute suggests Apple Lossless.
Should you convert at all?
Convert when compatibility is the problem you are solving. Do not convert just to tidy up a folder. Specifically, it is worth converting when:
- A device, upload form, or piece of software rejects M4A outright. Google Slides is a common example: it only accepts MP3 and WAV.
- You are sending the file to someone whose setup you cannot predict.
- You need to edit the audio in a tool that only handles MP3.
- The file is going somewhere permanent and you want the safest possible format for the next decade.
Keep the M4A instead when everything you use already plays it, when the file is a master recording you will edit again later, or when it contains Apple Lossless and you care about the quality. In that last case, converting to MP3 throws away audio for no reason. If you need an uncompressed working copy, export to WAV rather than MP3.

Bitrate is how much data each second of audio is allowed to use. Higher means better quality and a larger file. The options are 64, 128, 192, 256 and 320 kbps, plus Auto.
- 64 kbps: spoken word where file size matters more than fidelity. Audible artefacts on music.
- 128 kbps: the sensible floor for speech, podcasts, lectures and voice memos. Most listeners will not notice anything wrong.
- 192 kbps: a good general-purpose choice for music. This is the setting to use if you are unsure.
- 256 and 320 kbps: worth it only when your source is high quality to begin with. Encoding a 128 kbps AAC file at 320 kbps does not recover anything; it just makes the file bigger.
Sample rate: usually leave it alone
Sample rate is how many times per second the audio was measured, and 44.1 kHz is the standard for music and for almost everything else you will encounter. The converter also offers 22.05 kHz and 11.025 kHz, which halve and quarter the frequency range respectively. They exist for voice recordings where a much smaller file is worth losing the top end for. Reducing the sample rate is not reversible, so if you are unsure, do not touch it.
How much will the file size change?
Expect the MP3 to be similar in size to the M4A, or slightly larger at the same nominal bitrate, because AAC is a more efficient codec. A ten-minute AAC file at 128 kbps sits around 9 to 10 MB, and the MP3 at 192 kbps will land nearer 14 MB. If you need the file to be smaller rather than more compatible, lower the bitrate rather than changing format.
When the conversion does not work
The file is actually M4P
M4P is a DRM-protected format used by older iTunes Store purchases. It is deliberately encrypted and no converter can open it, including this one. The route forward is to obtain an unprotected copy of the track, not to look for a tool that claims it can strip the protection.
The file will not open at all
Occasionally an M4A is truncated, most often because it was copied off a phone mid-transfer or a recording app crashed before it finished writing the file. A partially written M4A has no valid index and cannot be decoded. If a media player also refuses to play it, the file is damaged rather than unsupported.
The result sounds duller than the original
This is generation loss, and it is expected on any lossy-to-lossy conversion. It is most audible on cymbals, sibilance in speech, and reverb tails. Going up a bitrate step usually makes it acceptable. If it is still noticeably worse, check whether you have a higher-quality source available, because the conversion cannot restore what was already missing.
Converting several files
The converter handles one file per export, so a batch has to be run a file at a time. If your goal is one continuous MP3 rather than several separate ones, that is a different job: convert each file first, then merge them with the audio joiner, which accepts between two and fifty files at once and can crossfade between them.
